The world's most densely populated coal mining island
Why is it called "Battleship Island"?
The shape of the island seen from the opposite shore resembles the battleship "Tosa," and so it has been nicknamed Gunkanjima since the Taisho period.
History of Gunkanjima
Meiji Period: Coal is discovered and full-scale coal mining development begins.
Showa period: High-rise reinforced concrete apartment buildings were built, and at its peak the island was bustling with a population of over 5,000.
1974: The mine closed due to the decline of the coal industry. All the islanders left the island.

Japan's first discovery of tyrannosaurus tooth fossils
It was discovered in 2014 as a result of a joint investigation by Nagasaki City and the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.
